Christmas Dental Myths Debunked!

Christmas Dental Myths Debunked!

The holiday season has arrived! It’s a time for family gatherings, office celebrations, plenty of prosecco, and countless tubs of Quality Street.

With so many distractions, it’s easy to neglect your usual oral hygiene routine. As dentists, however, it’s our responsibility to offer you sound advice, dispel common dental myths, and help ensure your teeth stay bright and healthy this Christmas.

Festive Dental Myth 1: Only sugary treats will cause cavities.

Truth: Sugar itself doesn’t cause cavities. It’s the bacteria in your mouth that feeds on the sugar and produces acid, which erodes your tooth enamel. Sugar in moderation is fine but more importantly it is making sure you have good oral health habits such as brushing your teeth, for two minutes, twice a day!

Festive Dental Myth 2: You should brush your teeth immediately after eating sweet treats.

Truth: Your tooth enamel will be slightly softer after eating acidic or sugary treats, so it’s best to wait around 30 minutes before brushing otherwise you could damage the enamel even further.

Festive Dental Myth 3: Chewing gum is just as good as brushing my teeth.

Truth: Unfortunately, not! Sugar-free chewing gum will increase saliva to help wash away bacteria that causes tooth decay and make your breath smell fresh, but it is no substitute for brushing your teeth and flossing/using interdental brushes.

Festive Dental Myth 4: Teeth can be handy tools at Christmas time.

Truth: No! Teeth are not designed to open bottles, bite tape or open packaging. Using them this way can lead to chips and cracks. No-one wants an emergency trip to the dentist over the festive season.

Festive Dental Myth 5: Champagne or prosecco won’t harm my teeth if I drink it alongside food.

Truth: Any sparkling wine is both sugary and acidic, a combination that will weaken the enamel on your teeth. To minimise the effects, try alternating glasses with water or drinking through a straw.
