Protecting Our Children’s Teeth From Decay

Protecting Our Children’s Teeth From Decay

At our dental practice, we heartily recommend a simple and painless treatment to help protect our children’s teeth – something called fissure sealants.

But what are fissure sealants and what do they do?

Fissure sealants are a preventive dental treatment that has been around since the 1970s. This treatment is usually applied to children’s teeth when their pre-molars and molars erupt. Sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars, especially those that have pits and fissures – these grooves are an ideal place for sticky residues which are a breeding ground for bacteria and thus decay.

As parents, we want the best for our kids and by getting a dental therapist to apply fissure sealants on our children’s teeth, we are taking the necessary steps to help prevent our kids from experiencing tooth decay and tooth loss.

Fissure sealants basically act as an extra protective layer so, alongside a consistent dental care routine (which includes proper brushing and a healthy diet), will help maintain your child’s overall dental health.

When should my child get sealants?

There is no set age, as all children are different. With regular check-ups, Beth and Lucy, our dental therapists, will be able to advise when the best time is. As a guideline though, fissure sealants should be applied as soon as possible after your child’s permanent molars erupt. This is generally around the age of 6 – 10 for most kids.

What is the process?

The therapist will dry your child’s tooth and then the sealant material will be placed onto the biting surface. A light is then placed above the tooth to harden (or set) the fissure sealant onto the tooth’s surface. It’s a quick and painless procedure.

We apply fissure sealants routinely and these are included in your child’s dental plan – if you want to know more, please feel free to ask Beth or Lucy at your child’s next appointment.
