A Step-By-Step Guide Through Your Appointment With a Dental Therapist

October marks Dental Hygiene Month and to celebrate we are shining the light on our dental therapists and their vital role in helping to support your oral hygiene and health.

If you would like to know more about the role of a dental therapist and how it differs from that of a dental hygienist, we’ve written a very handy blog here.

For this article, we asked dental therapist Beth to give us a step-by-step account of what happens during your appointment to show why visiting your dental therapist on a regular basis is important to keep your mouth, teeth and gums as healthy as possible.

It’s important to note that our dental therapists tailor appointments to the age and oral hygiene needs of each patient.

Step 1.

We will assess what products you are using to keep your teeth squeaky clean. Ideally, an electric toothbrush (which are better at removing plaque and bacteria in those hard-to-reach areas), a fluoride toothpaste and interdental brushes.

Step 2.

Often, we will discuss diet, especially if you have lots of sugar, carbonated drinks or hot drinks because they can lead to tooth decay, teeth staining and gum disease. We all know that a healthy, balanced diet can help to support good oral hygiene!

Step 3.

If applicable, we would discuss the effects of smoking and alcohol consumption on your oral health and offer advice and support if needed.

Step 4.

Next, we do a full examination of your mouth. This could include an oral cancer screening, gum measurements and plaque scores. Photos and x-rays can be taken if needed.

Step 5.

Scale and polish! We use hand instruments and water scalers to remove all the calculus (scale) and plaque to leave your teeth sparkling!

Step 6.

Following your scale and polish we might show you the correct techniques for brushing and interdental cleaning and recommend which products you should use. We have ample stock of interdental brushes etc. at the practice for you to stock up on.

Step 7.

If you wear braces or dentures, we will give you advice on how to care for them.

Step 8.

We record your notes on the computer ready for your next appointment!
