The Right Tools For The Job

At The Private Dental Centre in Boston, we believe that personalised dental care starts with the right tools. When it comes to your oral health, one size certainly does not fit all. Choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste for your age and dental needs can make a world of difference to improving and supporting your oral health.

Which toothbrush should I use?

For children, a small-headed, soft-bristled toothbrush is best. Soft bristles will effectively remove plaque or food debris without damaging gums or enamel. Look for brushes with large, easy-to-grip handles and colourful designs that make brushing fun! Electric toothbrushes designed for kids can also be helpful for little ones who resist brushing.

Medium or soft bristles are usually recommended for adults as hard bristles can wear down enamel, irritate gums and increase sensitivity. An electric toothbrush with a smaller head will help you to remove plaque effectively and reach all areas of your mouth including those hard-to-reach back teeth.

Seniors often face challenges like sensitive gums or limited mobility. A manual toothbrush with an ergonomic handle and extra-soft bristles will be light and can help reduce discomfort. On the other hand, electric toothbrushes will help you to remove plaque effectively with the right amount of pressure and without too much effort.

How often should I change my toothbrush?

The general rule of thumb is to change your toothbrush every three months or if it starts to show signs of wear, whichever comes first.

It is also important to change your toothbrush or toothbrush head after being ill as it may hold germs that could lead to re-infection.

Which toothpaste should I use?

Children’s toothpaste will have less fluoride than adult varieties and comes in milder flavours. As they grow, teach them to spit out excess paste rather than swallow it!

Adults should always use a fluoride toothpaste to prevent tooth decay. You can then choose options for whitening, sensitivity, or enamel repair based on your individual needs.

Seniors should choose toothpaste with fluoride and gentle formulas to help with common age-related concerns such as sensitivity, a dry mouth or enamel wear.

Smokers should look for a fluoride toothpaste with added ingredients to help tackle damaged enamel, plaque buildup and staining, which they are more prone to. A mint flavour will also help to neutralise bad breath.

How much toothpaste should I use?

A rice grain sized amount is sufficient for children under the age of three and a pea sized amount is sufficient for children over three and adults.

If you are still unsure about which toothbrush or toothpaste you should use, your dentist and dental therapist will be able to guide you in the right direction. And, as always, don’t forget to brush your teeth thoroughly for two minutes twice a day!
