Q&A with David Trawford

Q&A with David Trawford

We caught up with our new dentist, David, in-between patients to find out more about him!

What made you want to become a dentist?

My father was a veterinary surgeon in Spalding for 50 years and I too wanted to do something with my hands, but I didn’t want to be a doctor. So, next in line was dentistry!

Tell me a bit about your dental career?

I qualified as a dentist in 1978 and first started to work in Buckinghamshire before moving to Stamford, Lincolnshire. In 1987 I started working in Spalding until I retired from that practice at the end of 2023.

What is your favourite thing about being a dentist?

Meeting new people and being able to help my patients by setting them at ease and trying to do the best job possible.

What is your favourite treatment to do?

I really like restorative dentistry, root canals, prosthetics (dentures) and oral surgery. An all-rounder really!

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in dentistry over your career?

When I started as a dentist, we didn’t even wear rubber gloves! Things have moved on since then, but I’ve risen to the challenge and now enjoy using innovative technologies. The advancements of CAD/CAM technology have been incredible. It has allowed dentists to perform and construct complex restorations with more efficiency and precision.

How have you settled into the team at The Private Dental Centre?

Really well! Everyone is very friendly, and we’ve got lovely patients. The building makes a fantastic dental practice and the equipment we have for our treatments is state of the art. We’ve also got plenty of on-site parking which can be a nightmare for patients at some practices.

Why should people consider private dentistry?

Private dentistry will give you a wider choice of treatments and the dentists and therapists are able to spend more time with you, which, unfortunately isn’t always possible with the NHS due to a lack of funding.

What’s the best way to prevent tooth decay and gum disease?

It’s all down to education about oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist. It’s teamwork really, the dentists and therapists all come together with the patient to help prevent any problems.

What advice would you give to someone who fears the dentist?

Make sure your dentist is aware of how you feel so they can treat you with extra care and talk you through everything step. Sometimes, taking the bull by the horns is the only way!
